Continuing Professional Development


From the standpoint of exponential medical advances seen today, the centrality of continuing professional development (CPD)/continuing medical education (CME) as a system that ensures professional competence can neither be undermined nor overlooked. Enhancing safety and providing improved patient care is a life-long obligation for physicians.


Although CPD and CME are used interchangeably, there exists a clear disparity between the two. CME is a part of CPD; CPD caters to a wide spectrum of competencies required for high-quality medical practice, including medical, managerial, ethical, social and personal skills.


The process of maintaining competence through CPD encompasses the following 7distinct facets:
